HMD Global, which had the rights to sell the Nokia brand, has announced that it will no longer carry the Nokia name and will move forward with its own independent brand. This was announced by Nokia Phones and HMD CMO Lars Silberbauer on the social site “Linked IN” on Thursday.
However, HMD will not implement this immediately as it has a 10-year contract with the Nokia brand and it is already 8 years old, with 2 years still left. But HMD will now work primarily on its independent brand and not on the “Nokia” brand. Nokia had signed a 10-year contract with HMD to sell its “Nokia” brand, of which two years are still left. So HMD will sell this brand for 2 more years.
Nokia was once a leading mobile phone manufacturing company in Europe like Blackberry and Palm Mobile. Nokia accounted for approximately 50% of global mobile phone sales by 2007. In 1996, Nokia was the first company to make the first smartphone which also had a web browser. Nokia launched its first mobile phone based on GSM technology in the market in 1992. In 2001, the world’s first camera phone was also made by Nokia.
But after launching Android in 2007, Nokia started lagging behind in the smartphone competition. Although Nokia tried to make a comeback in the market with Windows operating system, but due to lack of APPs and complexity in operation, it could not succeed and almost reached the verge of disappearing from the market. And thus, due to competition from Google and Apple, Nokia’s top leadership sold the Nokia brand to HMD Global with a 10-year contract. Due to this, HMD Global was producing it till now but now after the above announcement, it seems that this brand will now be a guest for a few days and now a big brand like Nokia will become a memory of the past.
